Hapur: Sealed Water Bottle Turns Out To Be Acid, Woman Critical (Videos)

A woman remains in critical condition after unknowingly drinking acid from what was believed to be a sealed water bottle. The incident occurred on Friday (July 10) evening at a jewellery showroom in the Arjun Nagar area of Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, and was captured on the store’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

The victim had gone jewellery shopping with her mother when she felt parched and asked store workers for water. According to local reports, an employee at the jewellery shop was sent to a nearby confectionery to purchase a sealed water bottle.

"To the best of our knowledge, the bottle was completely sealed. We handed it to the customer exactly as it was when we took it out of the fridge," Denu, a worker at the jewellery store, told reporters.

CCTV footage from inside the showroom shows the woman opening the bottle and taking a quick sip. Immediately realizing something was wrong, she began writhing in pain and rushed out of the shop to spit out the corrosive liquid.

Emergency Hospitalisation

As the woman’s health rapidly deteriorated, bystanders and family members rushed her to a local hospital. Due to the severity of her internal injuries, she was later referred to a medical college in Meerut for advanced treatment, where she remains in critical condition.

Police Detain Shopkeeper, Launch Investigation

Following the incident, local police launched an investigation and detained the owner of the confectionery shop where the bottle was purchased.

Preliminary findings by investigators suggest the bottle of acid may have been mistakenly mixed into a batch of drinking water. However, the shop owner has claimed that the bottle was sealed and was handed over exactly as it had been received from distributors.

During a search of the confectionery, police officials recovered several bottles of acid. Authorities are currently questioning the shopkeeper and tracing the supply chain to determine how a highly corrosive substance was packaged and sold as sealed drinking water.
