A critical 4.28-metre high tide is expected to hit Mumbai's coast at 2:18 PM today, July 3, compounding urban flooding concerns as the city remains under severe weather alerts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall warning, forecasting intense showers to persist over the next 3 to 4 days. The active weather system is also expected to bring occasional gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph, prompting municipal teams to closely monitor vulnerable areas.

Tidal Windows and Drainage Challenges

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the 4.28-metre afternoon high tide presents a severe challenge to the city's drainage infrastructure. When heavy rainfall coincides with high tides, the seawater barrier prevents gravity-based storm systems from effectively clearing accumulated water into the Arabian Sea. Mumbai Rains: 8 Injured in Santacruz Tree Collapse As IMD Warns of Heavy Rainfall (Watch Videos).

Mumbai Braces for 4.28-Metre High Tide Today

Following the afternoon peak, a low tide of 1.74 metres is expected later tonight at 8:22 PM. This window will temporarily allow accumulated stormwater to recede, provided precipitation intensities drop.

Regional Rainfall Statistics and Localised Inundation

The incoming tide follows 24 hours of extensive rainfall across the metropolitan area. Data released by the BMC indicates that Mumbai's eastern suburbs registered the highest intensity of precipitation, averaging 189 mm during the 24-hour window ending at 8 AM on Thursday. Meanwhile, the island city logged an average of 172 mm, closely followed by the western suburbs, which received 165 mm of rainfall. According to reports compiled by the Press Trust of India (PTI), localised downpours were led by the Santacruz SWM Workshop and the S Ward Office in Bhandup, both recording a massive 238.8 mm of rain. Significant accumulations were also monitored at several other municipal stations:

  • Paspoli Municipal School, Powai: 234.6 mm
  • Tagore Nagar Municipal School, Vikhroli: 233.2 mm
  • Mithagar Municipal School, Mulund: 226 mm
  • Andheri Fire Station: 225.4 mm
  • F South Ward Office, Parel: 222 mm
  • G South Ward Office, Prabhadevi: 220.4 mm

Fatal Civic Incident Linked to Heavy Showers

The torrential downpours have already led to widespread waterlogging and resulted in an infrastructure-linked fatality. An official confirmed on Thursday that a man tragically died after being swept into an open manhole in the Chandivali area during the heavy rains. Severe waterlogging across the neighbourhood had completely hidden the uncovered manhole from view, preventing the victim from identifying the hazard. Civic bodies have urged residents to exercise extreme caution and avoid wading through submerged streets. Are Schools and Colleges in Mumbai, Thane and Other Cities Closed Today? Short-Term Weather Outlook

Data from private weather forecaster AccuWeather indicates that the city faces a 100 per cent chance of persistent rain under heavily overcast skies. Meteorologists warn that intense, heavy downpours could trigger sudden flash flooding in low-lying areas if drainage lines remain overwhelmed by the high tide block. Daytime temperatures are projected to peak at 29°C, dropping to a cool 26°C overnight. Emergency response units remain on standby across major chronic flooding nodes to mitigate traffic disruptions and clear waterlogging.
