Local police in the North Dinajpur district utilized drone surveillance and digital footprint tracking to dismantle a commercial human trafficking network, resulting in the rescue of 39 minor girls, officials confirmed on Monday. The three-day coordinated operation in Islampur led to the arrest of six suspected traffickers. The individuals have been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act alongside various anti-trafficking laws.
The operation was initiated after a field worker from a non-governmental organization (NGO) gathered intelligence regarding minor girls being held against their will and forced into commercial s*x work at a location within Islampur.
Following the initial tip, the worker coordinated with two prominent NGOs-AVA and Kosi Lok Manch-to deploy joint activist teams across Bihar and West Bengal. Once the activists verified the precise location of the victims, they briefed the local Superintendent of Police. Of the 39 rescued minors, thirteen are from Bihar and two are from West Bengal, with the youngest victim identified as an 11-year-old girl. Statements taken by law enforcement revealed that the girls were subjected to severe exploitation, forced to serve multiple clients daily without any financial compensation.
Following their extraction from the facility, all 39 minors were produced before a local Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and have since been relocated to secure shelter homes for rehabilitation and care.
