Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over alleged financial irregularities concerning donations at the Ayodhya Ram Temple, questioning the silence of central and state investigative agencies. In a video message and post shared on the social media platform X, the former Delhi Chief Minister alleged that approximately ₹200 crore in cash, along with several boxes of diamonds and jewelry, had been stolen from the temple's offerings. He expressed concern over the lack of a formal police complaint in the matter.
"The Ram Temple holds the faith of crores of Hindus," Kejriwal said in his post. "From that very Ram Temple, donations worth crores of rupees have been stolen, yet not a single FIR has been filed. Whom is the government protecting? No matter how big the people involved in this sin may be, throw them straight into jail." Samajwadi Party, Congress Want to Capitalise on Ram Temple Donation Row for 2027 Polls: VHP Chief Alok Kumar.
Kejriwal further questioned why central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), as well as the Uttar Pradesh Police, have not initiated independent raids or registered cases, despite the BJP being in power both at the Center and in Uttar Pradesh. He claimed that the hesitation stems from a fear that high-profile names are involved, suggesting that action could jeopardize the stability of the state government.
The allegations follow a report by a prominent national daily detailing claims of financial siphoning by certain temple staff members. Other opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and representatives from the Congress party, have also raised concerns over the management of the public funds and offerings collected by the trust. In response to the growing controversy, the Uttar Pradesh government on June 14 constituted a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged irregularities. The high-level committee, which includes senior IAS, IPS, and finance officials, has been directed to submit its findings promptly. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently appealed to political parties and citizens to refrain from making statements that could hurt the sentiments of devotees, urging stakeholders to wait for the official SIT report.
