New Delhi, February 2: IPS Rishi Kumar Shukla has been appointed as the new Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director for a period of two years. According to a tweet by ANI, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shukla as the new CBI Director for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge of the office. The 58-year- old officer is a 1983 batch officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre. Shukla was the Former Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police and is currently the chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Police Housing Corporation. His appointment comes a day after the Supreme Court asked the Centre to immediately appoint a CBI director.

On Friday, the top Court said it was 'averse' to the arrangement of an interim CBI director and the Centre should 'immediately' appoint a regular chief of the probe agency. On January 24, a high-powered Selection Committee met to appoint the new CBI Director, but remained inconclusive on the decision of finalising the name. Reports informed that the government had shortlisted 12 candidates for the post of the CBI director. The list includes Gujarat Director General of Police (DGP) Shivanand Jha and NIA (National Investigation Agency) DG Y.C. Modi, who are considered favourites of PM Modi. The list also included a female Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Rina Mitra.
