The reports describe the incident as an allegation based on the circulated footage. An official finding on the condition of the outlet or the products stored there has not yet been reported.
Incident Comes Amid FDA Inspections
The Kalyan episode comes shortly after a statewide inspection drive by the Maharashtra FDA targeting establishments involved in the storage, sale and delivery of food through online platforms.
On August 13, officials inspected 86 establishments associated with quick-commerce operations and reported several food safety and hygiene violations. The inspections covered issues including food storage, temperature control, cleanliness, pest control, worker hygiene and food-safety records. The FDA subsequently suspended 14 food-business licences — five linked to Blinkit, five to Zepto and two to Instamart, along with one each associated with Bhagwati Stores and Swinsta Ent Pvt Ltd. Sixty improvement notices were also issued, while one facility was directed to temporarily stop operations.
Earlier Action Against Blinkit Facility
The latest allegation follows regulatory action against a Blinkit facility in Mumbai’s Malad West, where the Maharashtra FDA had suspended the food licence after inspectors reportedly found serious hygiene violations, including a cockroach infestation and improper food storage.
Other inspections across the state have also identified problems involving temperature control, pest management and food handling. The developments have increased scrutiny of the hygiene standards maintained at quick-commerce “dark stores” and other facilities where food products are stored before delivery.
Food Safety Concerns Under Scrutiny
The Kalyan video has renewed questions about pest-control and sanitation measures at facilities handling frozen and other food products.
For quick-commerce companies, maintaining appropriate storage conditions is particularly important because customers increasingly rely on such platforms for packaged, refrigerated and frozen food items.
The Maharashtra FDA’s ongoing inspection campaign is expected to determine whether further regulatory action is warranted against facilities found to have violated food-safety requirements.
No confirmed FDA finding regarding the alleged rat sighting at the Kalyan Blinkit outlet had been reported in the sources available at the time of publication. The matter remains under scrutiny.
