The Tukaram Mundhe-led Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licence of Blink Commerce (Blinkit) Pvt Ltd’s "dark store" in Malad West following an inspection that revealed significant hygiene and food safety violations. The action was taken after food safety officers inspected the facility, located at Sarvodaya Bhuvan on Ramchandra Lane, on August 7, 2026. The inspection uncovered multiple health hazards that officials stated posed a risk to consumers.

Key Hygiene and Safety Failures

According to the FDA, the warehouse was found in a "severely unhygienic condition", reports the Times of India. Inspectors reported that food items were being stored on rusted racks or directly on the floor. Most notably, an infestation of cockroaches was discovered on stocks of fresh fruits and vegetables, raising serious concerns regarding potential cross-contamination. FDA Seizes Kaju Katli at Reliance Retail Outlet in Buldhana Over Quality Concerns.

Other critical violations identified during the inspection included:

  • Poor Pest Control: The warehouse lacked effective measures to prevent the entry of pests and rodents across storage and handling zones.
  • Improper Storage: Expired, damaged, and tampered packaged food items were found stored alongside fresh stock in cold rooms.
  • Waste Management: Inadequate waste management practices were observed throughout the facility.
  • Staff Compliance: The facility failed to provide health check-up records for food handlers, and workers were noted to be lacking proper protective gear.

Recurring Regulatory Issues

This suspension marks the second time in recent weeks that the FDA has taken action against a Blinkit facility. In late July, a warehouse in Pune’s Viman Nagar faced a similar licence suspension due to comparable hygiene failures. Tukaram Mundhe Orders FDA Inspection of Chinese Food Stalls Across Maharashtra; Here's Why.

Last year, the FDA also took action against another Blinkit facility in Pune after finding issues such as fungal growth on food items and improper cold storage temperatures. During that same period, the regulator had also suspended the licence of a Zepto warehouse in Dharavi after finding similar health and safety lapses. The current suspension of the Malad West warehouse remains in effect as the company addresses the identified safety violations and compliance requirements.
