The accident occurred around 7:00 AM on June 26 at the Sihori Toll Plaza (Kokhraj Bypass) located within the Kokhraj police station jurisdiction. The tanker was travelling from Kanpur toward Pratapgarh when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while attempting to overtake another vehicle. Kaushambi: School Headmaster Thrashed, Arrested for Sexually Abusing Girls After Showing Them Obscene Videos on Tablet.

LPG Tanker Crashes Into Kaushambi Toll Plaza

Witnesses stated that the road was wet from light rain just minutes before the crash. Upon hitting the divider and colliding with the toll booth structure, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) began rapidly escaping the ruptured tank. Within moments, the leaked gas ignited, resulting in a large blast that quickly spread across the toll lanes and into the administrative areas.

Casualties and Property Damage

According to Kaushambi police officials led by Superintendent of Police Satyanarayan Prajapat, the explosion resulted in severe injuries to at least seven individuals, including the tanker's driver, who died in the accident. Several victims sustained critical burns, with four workers reported to have suffered over 80 per cent burn injuries. The injured were initially rushed to a local district hospital before being transferred to the Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital in Prayagraj for advanced medical care. Additionally, the driver of the tanker died in the accident. His body was recovered from inside the burnt vehicle and sent for post-mortem.

The intense blaze burned for over two hours, causing extensive structural damage to the toll plaza's infrastructure. The facility's administrative building, automated ticketing machinery, and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras were heavily damaged or destroyed. Additionally, the fire quickly spread to an adjacent yard, reducing 16 motorcycles and two cars to ashes. Cash Loot in Kaushambi: Robbery Attempt on Bus Fails, Bag Full of Currency Falls on Road As Locals Scramble To Collect Notes (Watch Video).

Emergency Response and Traffic Disruption

Local police personnel and multiple fire brigade units from across the district were deployed to the site to contain the inferno. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control after a coordinated two-hour effort, though emergency crews remained on-site afterwards to monitor the cooling process and prevent re-ignition. The incident caused an immediate suspension of traffic on both sides of the busy highway, creating significant gridlock as vehicles were diverted to alternative routes. The district supply office, alongside a technical team, has launched an official investigation to determine the exact mechanical or operational failures that led to the accident.
