Thiruvananthapuram, October 3: After the Indian Meteorological Department predicted heavy to very heavy rains in parts of Kerala in this coming week, the state government issued a red alert in three districts. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the government had taken stock of the situation, seeking help from the central government.

"IMD has issued a warning about a low-pressure area in the Arabian sea close to Sri Lankan coast. This is likely to develop into a cyclonic storm, and a warning has been issued on the same. The predicted trajectory will be along the coast of Lakshadweep," Vijayan told media. "Red alert has been declared in three districts for October 7. Disaster Managment Authority has met to assess the situation. We've sought support from central agencies and asked for five companies of NDRF," Vijayan said. "Tourists have been advised not to travel to hilly regions, especially to Munnar to see the Neelakurinji," he added.

According to the IMD, Idukki is expected to receive maximum rains with 7-11 cms of rainfall on 3,4,5,7 and 7 October. Heavy rain is likely in Wayanad on four days - 3,4,5 and 6 October. Heavy rainfall is expected in Kozhikode on 5 and 6 October. In Kannur, heavy showers are expected on 6 October. Extremely heavy rain would lash some parts of Kerala on October 7, said IMD.
