Kerala: Teen Girl Alleges S*xual Harassment by Classmates, Cops Launch Probe

A 13-year-old student in Kerala has alleged that she was repeatedly s*xually harassed by multiple classmates over several months, prompting a police investigation and a suo motu intervention by the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. Police said 10 people, including a girl, have been named as accused in the case, with six of them being minors.

According to investigators, the alleged incidents took place in May this year at multiple locations, including the school premises, the residence of one of the accused girls, and the school's washroom. Authorities have launched a detailed investigation after the allegations surfaced during a school counselling session.

Allegations Emerged During Counselling Session

Police said the case came to light after the student disclosed the alleged abuse during a counselling session conducted at her school.

Following her disclosure, the matter was reported to Childline authorities, who informed the police. Based on the girl's statement, investigators registered a case and began collecting evidence.

Police Investigating Multiple Allegations

According to police, the minor was allegedly subjected to repeated s*xual harassment by several classmates at different locations.

Investigators are recording statements from those involved, gathering evidence, and examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged incidents.

Officials are also investigating whether the case has any connection with another s*xual assault case reported from the same area around one-and-a-half years ago. Police said all possible angles are being examined as part of the investigation.

Child Rights Commission Takes Suo Motu Cognisance

Taking cognisance of media reports, the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has registered a suo motu case.

The Commission has sought a detailed report from the police regarding the incident and the progress of the investigation.

Focus on Child Safety

The case has renewed concerns about the safety of children within educational institutions and the importance of effective child protection systems.

The fact that the allegations surfaced during a school counselling session has also highlighted the role of counselling services, mental health support, and child protection mechanisms in enabling children to report abuse.

Police said the investigation is continuing, and further action will be taken based on the evidence collected and statements recorded during the course of the probe.
