"Rahida was sitting on a concrete bench outside the urology department along with several other patients' attendants when the tree branch suddenly fell on them. She was taken to the trauma care unit, where doctors declared her dead," the police officer said. Rahida had come to SSKM Hospital from Nalhati in Birbhum to look after a relative undergoing treatment at the facility.
Two other people, identified as Zillar Rahman, 68, and Shish Mohammad Sheikh, 76, were also injured in the incident. Both are undergoing treatment at the trauma care unit of the hospital, police said.
Sheikh had come to SSKM Hospital for treatment of a kidney ailment. Police said he had been waiting since around 3 am to get a date for surgery when the incident occurred.
"He was lying on the concrete bench when the branch of the tree fell on his leg, causing a suspected fracture," the officer said.
The incident occurred as intermittent rain and strong winds were reported in Kolkata and several parts of south Bengal. The weather conditions were linked to a low-pressure area, with the combination of rain and wind contributing to concerns over trees and branches in the city.
In a separate incident, a man was injured after a tree fell on him near the SSKM Hospital's nephrology department, a hospital official said. The two incidents occurred within the hospital premises and nearby areas as the city experienced unsettled weather.
The Kolkata Police officer said no complaint in connection with the incident has so far been filed. Police and hospital authorities are expected to assess the circumstances surrounding the tree and branch falls.
