Video footage of the incident went viral on social media, prompting police to register a case against the two men while initiating an investigation into the vigilante violence.
The incident occurred in Maholiya Veeran village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Khutar police station. According to police authorities, the two men, identified as Radhe and Sonu, had traveled to the village to meet a 28-year-old married woman. Superintendent of Police (SP) Saurabh Dixit stated that the woman had been married for around eight years and was in recent telephonic contact with the two men, who are related to her as brothers-in-law. When villagers spotted the men speaking with the woman, a crowd gathered and confronted them, suspecting they were attempting to abduct her.
The confrontation escalated as villagers bound one of the men to a tree using a rope. In the circulated video, several individuals can be seen surrounding the victim, questioning him about his identity. The man identifies himself as a resident of the Palia area in neighboring Lakhimpur Kheri district, apologizes to the crowd, and promises not to return. Both men eventually managed to leave the village following the ordeal. Based on initial allegations that the men intended to abduct the woman, Khutar police have registered a case against Radhe and Sonu under Section 87 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police confirmed they are reviewing the viral footage and will initiate legal action against those involved in the physical assault if a formal complaint is submitted regarding the mob violence.
