Mumbai: 19-Year-Old Woman, Police Constable Among 5 Injured in Khar; Driver Arrested

A speeding electric crossover utility vehicle (CUV) rammed into a 19-year-old college girl and struck several people, including an on-duty police constable, before crashing into three stationary autorickshaws in Mumbai’s Khar West early on Sunday, September 20. Khar police arrested driver Dinesh Yadav (36), a resident of Goregaon, and booked vehicle owner Mehul Joshi (50), a businessman from Malad West. Following the registration of an FIR, Yadav was remanded to police custody, while Joshi was issued a notice to appear for questioning when summoned.

The accident took place around 1:35 am near Social Bar on Khar Station Road. Police said the speeding vehicle first knocked down Stacia Pereira (19), who was standing beside the road, and ran over her. College Girl Run Over in Khar West

According to investigators, Joshi was returning home after partying in Khar and was seated in the rear seat at the time of the collision.

“Joshi, who was returning home after partying in Khar and was seated in the rear, claimed Yadav had suffered a seizure. However, constable Sanjay Sanap alleged that Joshi gestured to Yadav to drive away and pushed the constable when he tried to stop the vehicle and help those injured,” said a Khar police officer. Bystanders Pull College Girl From Underneath Vehicle

Constable Sanap stated that the vehicle rolled over Pereira before ramming his vehicle, hitting pedestrians, and crashing into two to three autorickshaws, coming to a halt only after colliding with a stationary three-wheeler.

“With help from bystanders, police pushed the car back and pulled Pereira from underneath. She suffered severe injuries to her waist, hands and legs and was unable to move. Autorickshaw driver Asarfi Shrichand Mohto (30) suffered a shoulder injury, while his vehicle was damaged. Shanay Bhosle and Shrivats Palepu suffered minor injuries,” said Sanap in the FIR.

Pereira was rushed to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra, where she is currently undergoing medical treatment for multiple fractures and trauma. Her parents were subsequently informed by the police team.

FIR Lodged Under BNS and Motor Vehicles Act

The police team seized the electric CUV and took both the driver and the businessman to Khar police station before initiating legal proceedings.

Khar police registered a case against driver Dinesh Yadav and vehicle owner Mehul Joshi under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 125(B) (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty), 281 (rash driving), 324(4) (mischief causing damage), 3(5) (joint criminal liability), alongside Section 184 (dangerous driving) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Further investigation remains underway.
