Tensions escalated in Mumbai’s Dindoshi area ahead of Eid al-Adha after a temporary goat shed erected inside the Marigold Co-Operative Housing Society triggered objections from several residents and prompted intervention by BJP corporator Priti Satam.
The dispute emerged after concerns were raised over the possibility of animal sacrifices taking place within the residential premises. After receiving complaints from residents, Satam visited the housing society and addressed concerns related to hygiene, public spaces and civic regulations. “We will not let the sacrifice happen openly inside the premises,” Satam said while speaking to residents gathered at the site.
She clarified that the objections were not against religious practices themselves, but against conducting sacrifices inside a densely populated residential area located adjacent to a school. According to Satam, sacrifices should only be conducted at BMC-certified slaughterhouses and designated locations in accordance with civic norms. “They must strictly adhere to rules,” she said, stressing the need to maintain public hygiene and order during festival observances.
Several residents of the housing society also voiced concerns about hygiene and cleanliness inside the premises. A section of residents stated that the society largely consists of vegetarian families and argued that animal sacrifice within common residential areas could create discomfort and sanitation-related issues.
Residents further said the open setup in a high-footfall residential zone was not appropriate for such activities.
Meanwhile, Sameer, identified as the caretaker of the temporary goat shed, defended the arrangements and maintained that the organisers had secured the necessary civic permissions. “We have been celebrating Bakri-Eid here for the last 20 to 25 years,” Sameer said.
“However, in the last few years, Priti Satam has been creating problems by cancelling permission at the eleventh hour. Last year, we couldn't do anything here and had to conduct the sacrifices somewhere else,” he added. Sameer also stated that nearly 40 Muslim residents of the apartment complex had collectively contributed funds to purchase the goats for Eid al-Adha.
The Dindoshi dispute comes a day after violence erupted at a housing society in Maharashtra’s Thane district over the construction of a temporary goat shed ahead of Bakrid celebrations. According to police, tensions escalated after objections were raised over the presence of 40 to 50 goats inside the residential complex. While the temporary shed was later dismantled, the animals reportedly remained on the premises.
Police said a late-night altercation involving protesting residents and members of right-wing organisations, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, turned violent after one individual allegedly attacked people with a sharp weapon.
Three people, including local VHP functionary Nagnath Kamble, were injured before the accused was detained by police.
The back-to-back incidents have reignited debate around the handling of Eid al-Adha animal sacrifice arrangements within residential societies, particularly in urban areas with mixed communities. Authorities have repeatedly advised residents and organisers to follow municipal rules related to hygiene, designated slaughter zones and public safety during festival celebrations. No fresh violence was reported in the Dindoshi area at the time of publication.
