Mumbai Traffic Police Intensify Enforcement
Action was also taken against motorists identified through CCTV footage, with e-challans issued to those found violating traffic rules. The traffic police intensified enforcement measures during the Dahi Handi festivities to prevent accidents, maintain smooth traffic movement and ensure road safety amid increased vehicular and pedestrian movement.
The major violations recorded were:
- Obstruction to traffic flow:Â 3,727 challans
- Riding without a helmet:Â 3,249 challans
- Signal jumping:Â 1,478 challans
- Driving on the wrong side:Â 734 challans
- No-entry/One-way violations:Â 476 challans

One Dead, 376 Govindas Injured
The traffic enforcement came alongside a series of incidents during Dahi Handi celebrations across Mumbai. A minor boy was killed and 376 ‘Govindas’ were injured during the celebrations, civic officials said on Sunday.
Dahi Handi, a key part of the Janmashtami celebrations marking the birth of Lord Krishna, was observed across Maharashtra with traditional fervour on Saturday. The tradition involves ‘Govindas’ forming multi-tiered human pyramids to reach and break clay pots filled with curd that are suspended above the ground.
7-Year-Old Boy Dies In Malad's Malvani
A seven-year-old boy died after a brick column collapsed on him while a group of children were celebrating Dahi Handi on their own at Ekta Welfare Society in Chikuwadi, Malvani, on Saturday afternoon, an official said.
According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, 376 Govindas sustained injuries during the celebrations. The island city recorded the highest number of cases at 183, followed by 126 in the western suburbs and 62 in the eastern suburbs. Of those injured, 53 are currently hospitalised, while 37 others remain under treatment. A total of 286 people were discharged after receiving medical care, the BMC said.
KEM Hospital Reports Highest Number Of Cases
KEM Hospital in Parel reported the highest number of injured Govindas at 76. HBT Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari reported 34 cases, while Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar and V Desai Hospital in Vikhroli reported 33 cases each.
Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central recorded 32 injured Govindas. The incidents and traffic violations occurred as large crowds gathered across the city for Dahi Handi celebrations, increasing vehicular and pedestrian movement in several areas.
Mumbai Traffic Police said enforcement was intensified to prevent accidents, maintain smooth traffic movement and ensure road safety during the festivities. The 18,818 e-challans issued during the celebrations covered a range of violations, with traffic obstruction and helmet violations accounting for the largest shares of the reported cases.
