Counting underway across 309 urban local bodies
Polling for the Rajasthan urban local body elections was held in two phases on September 9 and September 11. Counting began at 8 am on September 14.
The elections cover 309 urban local bodies and thousands of wards across the state, making it one of the largest civic electoral exercises in Rajasthan. In Jaipur district alone, 2,644 candidates contested across 690 wards, including 150 wards of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation and 540 wards under other municipal bodies.
Jaipur, Ajmer among key contests
The results from Jaipur and Ajmer are among the closely watched contests in the elections. Ajmer Municipal Corporation has 80 wards, while counting for Jaipur's multiple urban local bodies is also underway.
Both the BJP and Congress had campaigned extensively ahead of the polls, with the outcome expected to shape their political strategies in Rajasthan.
Results seen as test for BJP and Congress
The civic elections are being viewed as an important political test for the BJP government led by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, while the Congress is looking to strengthen its position among urban voters.
With the 2028 Rajasthan Assembly elections still some time away, the local body results could offer both parties an early assessment of their grassroots support and organisational strength in the state.
