A 35-year-old man was stabbed multiple times outside Mahim railway station in Mumbai on Thursday night, June 25, after a petty argument over an alleged mobile phone damage. The incident comes just 48 hours after a separate commuter was killed in a similar altercation inside a Nalasopara-bound local train, raising concerns over repeated violent disputes in suburban rail premises.

The victim, identified as Navin Prasanna, had returned from work in Lower Parel by local train and stepped out of Mahim station around 10:15 pm when the incident occurred. Police said the accused, who is currently absconding, attacked him after a disagreement escalated into violence on the footpath outside the station.

Man Stabbed Outside Mahim Station

According to police, Prasanna accidentally bumped into another pedestrian after exiting the station.

The accused allegedly claimed that his mobile phone fell and broke during the collision and demanded compensation. When Prasanna refused to pay, the situation escalated. Police said the accused then pulled out a knife and allegedly stabbed Prasanna multiple times before fleeing the spot.

“We have registered a case of attempt to murder, criminal intimidation and intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, against an unknown person,” said an officer with the Mahim police. Prasanna, a resident of Pitamber Lane in Mahim West, sustained serious injuries to his abdomen and was rushed to Sion Hospital by local residents.

His brother Sachin said Prasanna works as an office boy in an advertising and entertainment company in Lower Parel. “My brother works as an office boy with an advertising, entertainment and technology company in Lower Parel, and was attacked outside Mahim station. He suffered serious injuries and was unconscious for 15 hours,” he said. Doctors at Sion Hospital treated his injuries, and he remains under medical observation.

Police said the attacker fled immediately after the stabbing. “We suspect he took a train and fled. Prima facie, he seems to be a drug addict,” said the police officer, adding that teams are searching for the accused. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from the station area and nearby routes to trace his movements.

The incident comes just two days after a 22-year-old commuter was stabbed to death in a separate dispute aboard a Nalasopara-bound local train. Police are now examining whether there is any connection or if both incidents reflect a growing pattern of impulsive violence over minor disputes in Mumbai’s suburban rail network.
