Mumbai Police personnel successfully rescued a 34-year-old man from a fast-flowing stormwater drain near the Western Express Highway in Dahisar. The dramatic operation unfolded after the local control room received an alert stating that an individual had entered the drain network and was reportedly inflicting self-harm. A mobile patrol unit from the Dahisar Police Station arrived at the scene within minutes, preventing a potential tragedy.
Emergency Response at Ghartanpada
The incident took place near Ghartanpada in Dahisar East. Upon entering the drainage system, the man was rapidly swept away by the swift monsoon current. Tactical Rescue Operations
A rescue team led by Assistant Police Inspector (API) Mahadev Jathar located the trapped individual inside the chamber. However, their immediate physical access was obstructed by a heavy protective metal grill. The responding officers systematically dismantled the metal grill while the water continued to flow rapidly beneath them. Rather than deploying physical force immediately, the team engaged the man in conversation to de-escalate his panic and gain his confidence.
Successful Rescue and Family Reunion
Moments after stabilising the individual emotionally, the officers pulled him safely from the chamber. Authorities identified the rescued man as a 34-year-old resident of Appa Pada, located in Malad East. Speaking to Mid-day, an officer attached to the Dahisar Police Station detailed the precarious nature of the rescue environment and provided initial context regarding the man's state of mind. “The situation inside the drain was dangerous. Water flow had increased at that point and if rescue had been delayed, the outcome could have been different. Our team spoke to him, gained his confidence and brought him out safely,” the officer said. The successful operation was executed by a Dahisar Police team comprising API Mahadev Jathar, Police Constable Ghodke, Police Havaldar Suravase, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Kamble, and police driver Parab. While a formal inquiry into the exact circumstances continues, officials credited the timely intervention of the personnel for averting a fatal outcome.
