Continuous heavy rainfall across Mumbai has triggered severe waterlogging in several low-lying areas, forcing civic authorities to shut down the crucial Andheri underpass for vehicular traffic. The closure of the vital east-west link has led to local traffic disruptions, while field officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) struggle to manage commuter safety amidst the rising water levels.
Municipal workers stationed at the site reported high-risk incidents involving stranded commuters. According to BMC Official Rhitik, field personnel are encountering difficulties in enforcing the safety closure, particularly with local public transport drivers attempting to cross the inundated stretch. "We have not been able to find a temporary solution for this severe waterlogging," Rhitik stated, adding that officers remain deployed on-site to block access. "Some rickshaw drivers still try to get their vehicles across. An auto-rickshaw got stuck in the center of the subway, putting the driver's life in danger. Two of our officers managed to help bring him out safely."
The civic administration has emphasized that its primary focus remains preventing further casualties. "We are doing our best to ensure that no vehicles get inside the underpass," said another BMC Official, Robert. "Our priority is trying to protect as many people as possible."
The persistent downpour continues to impact various sectors of the city, with weather conditions showing no immediate signs of clearing. Low-lying intersections like the Andheri underpass remain highly susceptible to rapid water accumulation during intense spells of rain, routinely challenging the city's existing drainage network.
