A massive accumulation of mud, stones, and uprooted trees crashed onto the Old Kasara Ghat corridor early Tuesday morning following continuous torrential rain. The landslide severely disrupted traffic on the Mumbai-Agra National Highway, a vital artery connecting Mumbai with northern and eastern parts of Maharashtra, including Nashik. The incident occurred around 7:00 AM near Hiwala Point. Heavy boulders and shifting soil weakened by the relentless downpour rolled down the hilly terrain, completely blocking the main carriageway. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported.
Emergency Response and Traffic Management
Upon receiving information about the landslide, disaster management teams, Kasara police, and Highway Police (Ghoti) rushed to the site. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) deployed earthmovers and JCB machines to clear the debris on a war footing. Nashik Rain Red Alert: Schools Closed, Temples Shut Amid Cloudburst Warning (Watch Video).
By mid-morning, authorities managed to clear the rubble and open one lane to restore restricted, single-lane vehicular movement. However, traffic toward Nashik remains slow as clearing operations continue and heavy rain complicates the process. Highway authorities have urged commuters to maintain controlled speeds and avoid parking near vulnerable cliff edges.
Extreme Rainfall Records in Igatpuri and Surrounding Blocks
The regional administration had already placed the vulnerable Igatpuri and Trimbakeshwar talukas on high alert prior to the incident. According to official meteorological data, Igatpuri recorded a staggering 200 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour window, leading to severe localized flooding.
Other areas also logged significant numbers: Surgana received 149 mm, Trimbakeshwar recorded 125 mm, and Sinnar noted 74 mm. The intense downpours have flooded low-lying paddy fields in Umbermali and Vasala, and cut off access to several remote tribal hamlets due to minor mudslides on rural link roads. Nashik Weather Update: Cloudburst Warning Status
The water level of the Godavari River in Nashik has risen close to the danger mark due to the constant influx of rain. Security personnel have been deployed around Ramkund and the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga temple premises to ensure public safety, and local tourism spots have been temporarily shut down.
While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a strict alert over potential cloudburst risks caused by a weather vortex hovering over the Palghar-Nashik belt, the district administration shared a critical update. Nashik Collector Ayush Prasad confirmed that the wind system has shifted direction toward Surat, significantly minimizing the immediate threat of a localized cloudburst.
However, the region remains under a heavy rain warning for the next 24 to 48 hours. Central Railway has deployed additional workforce across the Igatpuri-Nashik-Manmad rail section to monitor tracks and handle any further rain-induced emergencies.
