Navi Mumbai Water Cut: 10% Water Cut and Evening Shutdowns To Begin in Parts of NMMC From May 25; Check Details
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation announced a 10 per cent water cut and rotational evening supply suspensions starting Monday, May 25. The measures come as the Morbe dam's usable stock fell below 20 per cent due to high summer temperatures and evaporation. CIDCO areas like Kharghar will also face total supply halts on Fridays for pipeline maintenance.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) announced a mandatory 10 per cent water cut across the city, effective from Monday, May 25, s a major pre-monsoon conservation measure. The decision follows a severe drop in the usable water stock at Morbe dam - the city's primary source of drinking water - which has officially plummeted below the critical 20 per cent threshold. To further preserve dwindling reserves, the civic body will also suspend evening water supplies twice a week on a rotational basis across various urban nodes.
Depleting Reservoir Levels and Climate Pressures
According to official data released by the NMMC, only 36.87 million cubic metres (MCM) of usable water stock currently remains in the Morbe dam, against its total gross holding capacity of 190.89 MCM. Engineering and civic officials attributed the rapid depletion to a combination of rising summer temperatures, elevated daily consumption rates, and substantial evaporation losses over the recent weeks. Wider meteorological factors have also prompted the administrative caution. Anticipated delays and fluctuations in monsoon intensity, driven by shifting global weather patterns like El Niño and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), mean the civic body must actively stretch current emergency reserves over a longer period.
"The prevailing high temperatures have resulted in significant evaporation losses at the reservoir. While there is no cause for panic at present, prudent management is essential," said Arvind Shinde, additional city engineer for the NMMC. "To maintain the reliability and continuity of Navi Mumbai’s water distribution system and plan for the current and upcoming year, we are implementing this reduction," he added.
Rotational Evening Supply Interruptions
The water cuts will directly impact municipal areas as well as key City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) nodes, including Kharghar and Kamothe. To manage the shortfalls systematically, the NMMC has implemented a strict weekly rotation schedule for evening shutdowns:
- Mondays and Thursdays: Evening supply will be completely suspended in Belapur and Vashi.
- Tuesdays and Saturdays: Supply cuts will affect residents in Nerul and Koparkhairane.
- Wednesdays and Sundays: Restrictions will move to Turbhe and Ghansoli.
For areas bordering the outskirts, Airoli will face an evening supply shutdown every Friday due to scheduled maintenance linked to the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran system, while neighbouring Digha's restrictions will vary depending on ongoing technical maintenance schedules. Pipeline Infrastructure Maintenance
Beyond the structural municipal cuts, the supply lines originating from the Morbe system toward the CIDCO-administered territories of Kharghar and Kamothe will face additional adjustments. Potable water delivery to these specific nodes will be entirely halted every Friday to allow engineering teams to execute critical pipeline maintenance work and address minor system leaks.
NMMC Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde appealed to city residents to adopt strict water-saving habits and use local supplies judiciously to minimise daily stress on the distribution grid. The municipal administration confirmed that these restrictive measures will remain firmly in place until consistent, satisfactory monsoon rainfall recharges the Morbe dam catchment area.
