Nepal Flood Death Toll Rises to 1,410; Over 6,100 People Still Missing

The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to 1,410, while 6,145 people remain missing, according to the latest figures released by the country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) on Thursday. The floods, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, swept through parts of northern and central Nepal, causing extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure.

Authorities said 13,756 people have been rescued from flood-affected areas so far. Security forces and disaster response teams continue search and rescue operations across the affected districts. The Bhotekoshi River carried floodwaters downstream from the Himalayan border region, damaging infrastructure and sweeping away vehicles, homes and other structures. Search operations have also focused on hydropower projects, where workers were reported missing after tunnels and other facilities were inundated with mud and debris. Chitwan Records Highest Number of Recovered Bodies

According to the latest NDRRMA figures, 364 bodies have been recovered from Chitwan, the highest number among the affected districts. Other major recoveries include 232 bodies in Nawalparasi East, 222 in Nawalparasi West, 203 in Nuwakot and 199 in Rasuwa. Bodies have also been recovered from Gorkha, Dhading and Tanahun. Two additional victims died while undergoing treatment at hospitals in Kathmandu, according to the latest official figures.

Search Operations Continue for Thousands Missing

The large number of people still unaccounted for has kept search and recovery operations underway weeks after the August 26 floods. Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, police and other rescue teams have been involved in operations at several flood-hit locations. Specialized teams have also been working at hydropower facilities where access remains difficult because of mud, debris and damaged infrastructure. The identification of recovered bodies has also emerged as a major challenge. Earlier official updates said teams from several countries were supporting tunnel rescue and identification efforts. With thousands of people still missing, authorities continue to update casualty figures as search, recovery and identification operations progress.
