A mechanical failure at Panvel Railway Station in Maharashtra's Navi Mumbai triggered a brief rescue operation this morning, April 20, after an elevator (lift) on Platform Number 7 suddenly malfunctioned. Four passengers were trapped inside the lift as it reportedly plummeted a short distance before coming to a halt. Emergency response teams and railway technicians were mobilised immediately, successfully extricating all occupants within 10 minutes. No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.

Panic spread among onlookers as the passengers remained stuck in the confined space. However, railway staff reached the site within minutes. Swapnil Nila, Public Relations Officer for Central Railway, said that the elevator door did not close properly after passengers entered the lift, causing it to stall. He further said that the technical team opened the doors manually and brought all passengers out safely.
Maintenance and Safety Concerns
The failure has sparked criticism from daily commuters regarding the upkeep of station infrastructure. Panvel station is currently undergoing significant expansion as it transforms into a major terminal, leading to a surge in passenger footfall. While modern elevators and escalators were installed to assist senior citizens and differently-abled passengers, commuters expressed frustration over perceived lapses in regular inspections. Official Inquiry Ordered
Central Railway officials have confirmed that a formal inquiry is underway to determine the precise cause of the malfunction. The elevator has been taken out of service temporarily for a comprehensive safety audit and repairs. Authorities stated that they are reviewing the maintenance logs of all vertical transport systems at the station to prevent future occurrences. In the interim, passengers are being directed to use the foot overbridges and escalators while technicians work on the affected lift.
