A mobile phone recovered from the prison cell of former Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna contained p*rnographic content, while a pen drive seized alongside it held movies, according to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) analysis. The case involving the prohibited devices is likely to be handed over to a Special Investigation Team (SIT), journalist Deepak Bopanna posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, September 12. Revanna, who is serving a life sentence in a rape case, was lodged at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison when the items were found.

Seizure During August Raid

Central Crime Branch (CCB) teams conducted a surprise search at the high-security prison on August 11. Officials recovered a light-blue Redmi 5G smartphone, a charger, a SanDisk pen drive and a pocket notebook from the cell shared by Revanna and undertrial prisoner Prathap Rai. 90 P*rn Videos, Women’s Pics in Revealing Clothes: What Police Reportedly Found on Prajwal Revanna’s Phone Seized in Jail.

The phone had password-protected applications including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video installed. Revanna and Rai told search teams they did not know the passwords. Revanna claimed the notebook, which contained phone numbers linked to family members and others, belonged to him. Rai initially said the phone, charger and pen drive were his, though later accounts indicated Revanna had used the device for some time.

An FIR was registered at Parappana Agrahara police station. The assistant superintendent of the prison was suspended for dereliction of duty, and a show-cause notice was issued to the superintendent. Revanna was later shifted from a higher-security or VIP-category cell to a general cell.

Police Statements on Content and Forensic Examination

Shortly after the raid, media reports claimed 80–90 p*rnographic videos and newspaper clippings of women in revealing clothing were found on the phone. Electronic City Deputy Commissioner of Police M. Narayana rejected those reports as "completely false". He said the devices had been sealed in the presence of witnesses and had not yet undergone forensic examination. The primary focus, he said, was establishing how the phone entered the prison.

The seized items were sent to the FSL. As of early September, investigators were examining the laboratory findings along with call detail records and other digital evidence. No official confirmation of the specific contents described in the post by Deepak Bopanna has been issued by police in major public statements.

Arrests and Smuggling Probe

Police later arrested several people in connection with the supply of the phone and SIM card. Reports identified five to seven individuals, including prison personnel, who were booked for allegedly facilitating the smuggling. According to investigators, Revanna paid around ₹1 lakh for the handset and SIM. A jail warden was said to have handed over the phone, while an undertrial prisoner allegedly brought in the SIM card. Revanna and Rai were briefly remanded to police custody in early September for questioning on how the devices reached the cell and how they were used. The SIM card was reportedly procured from Andhra Pradesh. Police have noted that hundreds of mobile phones have been recovered from the prison complex this year amid ongoing efforts to curb such violations. Prajwal Revanna Sex Scandal: Former JDS MP Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Rape, Fined INR 10 Lakh.

Background on Prajwal Revanna

Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda and son of JD(S) leader H.D. Revanna, was convicted in August 2025 and sentenced to life imprisonment in a case involving the s*xual assault of a domestic worker. He faces additional related cases. The original allegations against him centred on recorded videos that circulated widely in 2024, leading to a Special Investigation Team probe. Prison authorities have emphasised that mobile phones and similar items are strictly prohibited. The current investigation continues to examine the network that allowed the devices into the high-security facility and any role played by staff or other inmates. Officials have not publicly confirmed any transfer of the case to an SIT as of the latest available reports.
