A 50-year-old patient died after allegedly getting trapped inside a lift at a private hospital in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, on Saturday night, August 29. The deceased, identified as Suresh Sen, had been admitted after suffering injuries in a fall from a tree. A video of the incident has surfaced, showing him trapped inside the lift while family members can be heard crying and seeking help.

The incident took place at National Hospital in the Saman area of Rewa. Sen's family has accused the hospital management of negligence and staged a protest outside the facility following his death, FPJ reported. What Happened Inside The Hospital Lift?

According to his son Himanshu Sen, Suresh, a resident of Lalpur village in Amarpatan, had suffered serious injuries after falling from a tree several days earlier. He had fractured his shoulder and was brought to the private hospital on Saturday evening. Himanshu alleged that a hospital employee placed Suresh, who was lying on a stretcher, inside the lift to take him to an upper floor.

When family members attempted to enter the lift, the employee allegedly stopped them and asked them to take the stairs. When the family reached the upper floor, they allegedly found Suresh trapped inside the lift, with part of his body stuck in the mechanism. Video Shows Family Seeking Help

A video circulating from the incident shows Suresh trapped inside the lift along with the stretcher. His family members can be heard crying and asking for help. A person in the video can also be heard saying that they had been waiting for around 10-15 minutes.

The family alleged that another girl had been trapped in the lift around 20 minutes before Suresh's incident. They claimed that despite the earlier incident, adequate safety measures were not taken by the hospital management.

Police Say Lift Broke Down

CSP Rajiv Pathak said police received information about a person dying after getting trapped in a private hospital lift. According to the initial information received by police, the lift broke down and Suresh's neck became trapped, leading to his death.

The body was shifted to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police said the family was asked to come to the police station so their demands could be discussed, but the family members did not agree.

Family Stages Protest Outside Hospital

Following Suresh's death, hundreds of people staged a sit-in outside the hospital on Sunday. Protesters raised slogans against the hospital administration and demanded action against those responsible. The demonstration led to a commotion outside the hospital.

Police reached the spot and attempted to bring the situation under control. Family members, however, accused the police of misbehaving with them and assaulting some protesters.

Brijesh Sen, a relative of the deceased, said: "The life was lost due to the hospital administration's negligence. The hospital does not have adequate arrangements for patients' safety. There are no proper provisions for the safety and maintenance of the lift. Suresh has left us today."

Family Alleges Police Misconduct

Family member Sonu Sen said, "The police beat us and dragged us on the ground. We are sitting in protest seeking justice, but the police are bent on assaulting us. The family wants not just assurances, but action against those responsible and justice. A fair investigation should be conducted and strict action taken against the accused."

Police have not confirmed the family's allegations of assault.

Jitu Patwari Raises Questions

Congress state president Jitu Patwari also raised the issue on social media.

He wrote: “An innocent person lost his life after getting trapped in a hospital elevator in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, under the state's Health Minister Rajendra Shukla. This is not an accident but a state-sponsored killing. Who will answer for it?”

“The state's healthcare system is in shambles. The system in the Health Minister's own city has collapsed. No attention is being paid to the state of healthcare here. Whether government or private, there are insufficient regulations and monitoring of healthcare services,” he said.

Patwari's remarks came amid the family's allegations against the hospital administration.

Body Sent For Post-Mortem

Police said, "The enraged family members are being calmed down. For now, the body of Suresh Sen has been sent to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Further action regarding the circumstances of the death will be taken after the post-mortem. Police are investigating the entire matter."

The post-mortem report is expected to provide further information about the circumstances and cause of Suresh's death.

Hospital Yet To Issue Statement

The National Hospital administration has not issued an official statement regarding the cause of the incident or the allegations made by the deceased's family.

The police investigation is continuing, with authorities examining the circumstances surrounding the lift breakdown, the events inside the hospital and the allegations of negligence.
