Routine medical services at the KDMC-run Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli were suspended today, July 7. Wondery why? The services were halted as healthcare staff staged a protest against the alleged assault of doctors and nurses by a patient's relatives and Shiv Sena corporator, Ramesh Mhatre. While routine outpatient and non-emergency services remained halted, hospital officials confirmed that emergency medical care continued to function normally.

Incident Triggered by Bed Availability Dispute

According to hospital officials, the incident occurred late Monday night when a 33-year-old pregnant patient from Kopar Road was admitted to the facility. Medical staff diagnosed the patient with a complication involving the umbilical cord and planned a lower segment caesarean section (LSCS). Maharashtra: Shiv Sena Corporator Ramesh Mhatre Assaults Doctors and Nurses at Shastrinagar Hospital, Video Surfaces.

As the medical team prepared for the procedure, they anticipated that the newborn would require immediate admission to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). When staff informed the family that the hospital's NICU was at full capacity, a dispute ensued. The patient's relatives reportedly contacted Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre. Hospital sources stated that upon his arrival, corporator Ramesh Mhatre engaged in a heated argument with the medical staff. During the altercation, Mhatre allegedly assaulted a doctor, the attending gynaecologist, and several nurses. The patient was later transferred to the KDMC-run Vasant Valley Maternity Hospital, where she safely underwent the surgery, and the infant was admitted for observation.

Hospital Staff Demand Accountability

Following the incident, doctors and nurses organised a work boycott on Tuesday morning, July 7, to express their grievances. Healthcare workers are demanding that a formal case be registered against all individuals involved, including the corporator. Hospital staff alleged that the corporator had been involved in previous incidents at the hospital. They expressed frustration with the administration's initial response, claiming that authorities were initially considering legal action only against the patient's relatives. The Indian Medical Association has also condemned the attack and is urging authorities to take stringent action against the accused.

Official Response

As part of the ongoing protest, representatives of the hospital staff gathered at the KDMC headquarters to meet with Commissioner Abhinav Goel. They urged the administration to ensure a thorough investigation and strict accountability for those responsible. Dr Sadiya Pinjari, Chief Medical Officer at Shastrinagar Hospital, confirmed that the suspension of routine services was a temporary measure tied to the staff protest. She further said that the matter will be reported to the police and further action would be taken following the investigation.
