Single App To Charge Any EV? Maharashtra Govt Reveals Centre’s New Plan
EV owners may soon need just one app to access public charging stations across India. In a written reply in the Maharashtra Assembly, the government said the Centre is developing Unified Bharat E-Charge under the PM E-DRIVE scheme. The platform will allow users to locate chargers, check availability, book slots and make payments across different charging networks through a single app.
Electric vehicle (EV) owners across India may soon be able to access charging stations operated by different companies through a single mobile application, with the Centre developing a unified digital platform aimed at simplifying public EV charging. The Maharashtra government shared the details in a written reply in the Legislative Assembly, outlining the Centre's plan to create a common interface for EV users nationwide.
The update came in response to a question raised by BJP MLA Prashant Bamb, who asked whether the government was considering a common mobile application for EV charging stations. At present, EV users often have to download separate applications for different charging point operators (CPOs), making the charging experience less convenient. Centre Developing 'Unified Bharat E-Charge'
In its written reply, the Maharashtra government acknowledged that the current system requires multiple operator-specific applications, resulting in a fragmented charging experience for consumers.
To address this, the Centre is developing 'Unified Bharat E-Charge' under the PM E-DRIVE scheme. The platform is intended to integrate public EV charging stations operated by different companies into a single digital ecosystem. India’s EV Battery Demand To Surge 10x by 2032: IESA Report.
According to the government, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has been appointed as the Project Implementation Agency to develop the platform in accordance with the Operational Guidelines for Public EV Charging Stations.
What the Platform Will Offer
Once launched, the unified platform will allow EV users to:
- Locate nearby public charging stations
- Check real-time charger availability
- Book charging slots
- Make digital payments
- Access charging services across different operator networks through a single application
The initiative is designed to improve interoperability among charging point operators and eliminate the need for consumers to switch between multiple mobile applications.
Aim Is a Seamless Charging Experience
The government said the unified platform is expected to provide a standardised and seamless charging experience as India's public EV charging infrastructure continues to expand.
However, the written reply did not specify when the platform will be rolled out.
According to the government, the objective is to offer EV users a single digital interface for accessing charging services provided by different operators across the country. If implemented as planned, the platform could simplify public charging for EV owners by bringing multiple charging networks under one application.
