In a major move to incentivize grassroots-level election personnel, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a one-time honorarium of INR 6,000 for Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and BLO Supervisors deployed for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

The financial incentive aims to recognize the demanding physical workload of field staff tasked with ensuring the accuracy of the country’s electoral database. The Special Intensive Revision is a massive nationwide effort to sanitize voter lists. In its current phases, hundreds of thousands of BLOs-who are primarily government schoolteachers, anganwadi workers, and local state employees-are visiting households to verify credentials.

Due to the intensive nature of the door-to-door enumeration, which often requires field officers to work outside their standard hours and navigate challenging terrains, the Commission has sanctioned the ₹6,000 special incentive to compensate them for their additional efforts.

This special honorarium follows a broader revision of compensation structures enacted by the ECI. The commission previously doubled the basic annual remuneration for BLOs from INR 6,000 to INR 12,000. For the first time, the poll panel also introduced dedicated annual honorariums for Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs). The ECI has consistently maintained that clean, error-free electoral rolls are the bedrock of a transparent democratic process.

By providing direct financial incentives, the Commission intends to keep ground-level staff motivated as they tackle complex issues such as mapping migrant populations, verifying deceased voters, and dividing large polling booths to ensure no genuine voter is left out.
