A man in his early 30s died on Friday after allegedly jumping from the third floor of the Sonipat Civil Hospital while attempting to evade hospital staff after stealing a patient's mobile phone. The deceased, whose identity has not yet been established, sustained fatal injuries from the fall.

Phone Stolen From Woman Patient
According to the patient, identified as Preeti, she had been admitted to the hospital earlier on Friday after her health deteriorated. At around 1.30 pm, she noticed a man moving around the medical ward. The man later lay down on an empty bed next to her. After she fell asleep, she woke up when she noticed movement near her bedsheet and found that her mobile phone was missing. She alerted hospital staff, who began chasing the man as he allegedly tried to flee with the phone.
Man Falls While Trying to Escape
Police said the man apparently attempted to evade those chasing him by jumping from the hospital building. He sustained serious injuries in the fall and died. The deceased is believed to be around 30 to 35 years old. A separate local report said the man fell from a height of around 24 feet while attempting to escape through a window. However, the Times of India report describes the location as the third floor, while the local report refers to the second floor, so the exact floor from which he fell remains inconsistently reported.
Police Begin Investigation
Sector-27 SHO Inspector Savit Kumar said police reached the hospital after receiving information about the incident. Police are working to establish the deceased man's identity. The post-mortem examination will be conducted after identification, according to the police.
The damaged mobile phone has been taken into police possession. Preeti told police that she had purchased the phone around two months ago on instalments and had paid only two instalments so far.
Hospital to Strengthen Security
The incident has also raised questions about security inside the government hospital, particularly regarding access to patient wards. Civil Hospital CMO Dr Alankrita Gaira said security measures would be strengthened. Authorities plan to install iron gates outside the wards and increase monitoring of people entering the medical ward.
Security personnel will also question people whose behaviour appears suspicious, officials said. The investigation is continuing, with police focused on identifying the deceased and establishing the precise circumstances surrounding the fall.
