Sushma Swaraj Seeks Highest Level Action on Abduction of 5 Indian Sailors by Pirates in Nigeria

The Minister asked Indian Ambassador in Nigeria Abhay Thakur to "take the matter" with the Government of Nigeria to ensure an immediate release of sailors.

New Delhi, May 7: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday urged the Indian High Commissioner in Nigeria to take the issue of abduction of five Indian sailorsĀ on top priority andĀ ensure their release. Swaraj also sought a detailed report on the incident as early as possible. The MinisterĀ asked Indian Ambassador inĀ NigeriaĀ Abhay Thakur to "take the matter" with the Government ofĀ Nigeria on priority to ensure an immediate release of sailors.Ā .Ā Sushma Swaraj Tweets 'Hum Hain Na' to Man Stranded in Saudi Arabia, Wins Hearts Again.

The decision comes after there were reports that Indian pirates were abducted in the African nationĀ two weeks ago.Ā  Swaraj took to Twitter and said, "I have seen news reports about abduction of five Indian sailors by pirates in Nigeria. I am asking Indian High Commissioner to take this up at the highest level with Government of Nigeria for their release".

According to reports, the family members of the abducted sailors said they are unable to contact them for several days now.Ā On April 24,Ā Bhagyashree Das, wife of one of the abducted sailor Sudeep Kumar Choudhury sought help from Swaraj on Twitter. Das said her husband has been kidnapped from the MT APECUS (IMO 733810) vessel.
