A significant fire at a New Delhi data centre facility, jointly operated by ST Telemedia and Tata Communications, has triggered widespread concern over potential data loss and caused persistent network disruptions for Google Cloud services in India. The blaze, which reportedly originated in lithium battery units, has resulted in extensive damage to server infrastructure.

Extensive Infrastructure Damage

As per a report by Business Standard, the fire caused severe destruction within the facility, leaving server racks and electrical systems burned. While the joint venture, STT Global Data Centres India, stated that the impact was contained to a single data hall, the severity of the damage has complicated ongoing recovery efforts for affected clients. Lucknow Fire: Massive Blaze at Ground Floor Shop Spreads to Coaching Centre; Video Shows Students Jumping From 1st Floor.

Client Impact and Data Recovery Struggles

Several businesses are now reporting significant operational hurdles due to the outage. Matrix Cellular, a provider of international SIM cards, claims to have lost access to over two decades of operational and business data. The company’s CEO, Gaurav Khanna, expressed frustration over the lack of restored backups twenty days after the incident.

Another affected client, internet service provider R2 Net, estimated its losses at approximately $2 million. The facility's management has indicated that a detailed technical root cause analysis is currently underway and is expected to require five to seven weeks to complete. Delhi Fire: Blaze Erupts at Workers' Temporary Shelter Near Udyog Bhawan, Firefighting Operations Underway (Watch Video).

Google Cloud Connectivity Issues

The disruption has also impacted broader cloud infrastructure. Google reported intermittent network disruptions in India following an emergency power shutdown of networking equipment at the third-party site. As of June 23, Google indicated that there is no immediate workaround, warning customers that latency issues may persist until the facility is fully operational.
