Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced on Wednesday that the state government will write to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to recommend a probe into the death of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma. The decision follows a high-profile meeting between the Chief Minister and the victim’s family at the state secretariat in Bhopal, where the family expressed deep lack of faith in the local police investigation.

Twisha Sharma, a marketing and communications professional originally from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, was found dead on the night of May 12 at her matrimonial home in Bhopal's Katara Hills area. Married to Bhopal-based advocate Samarth Singh in December 2025, she was reportedly two months pregnant at the time of her death. While her in-laws claimed she died by suicide, her family has alleged severe mental and physical torture, citing it as a case of dowry death. During the meeting, CM Mohan Yadav assured the grieving family of full state support and promised to expedite the paperwork required to hand the investigation over to the central agency. Addressing the family's demand for a second autopsy at AIIMS Delhi, the Chief Minister stated that while the ultimate decision rests with the judiciary, the state government remains fully prepared to arrange and fund the immediate transportation of her remains if the court grants permission.

The state government's intervention comes amid mounting criticism from the victim's father, Navnidhi Sharma, and her brother, an Indian Army Major. The family has staged public protests in Bhopal, alleging that local administrative and police machinery were actively working to shield the accused due to their influential legal background. The mother-in-law of the deceased, Giribala Singh, is a retired district judge, and her husband is a practicing lawyer.

The initial post-mortem examination, conducted at AIIMS Bhopal, concluded that the primary cause of death was antemortem hanging by ligature. However, the medical report also flagged multiple simple antemortem injuries caused by blunt force on other parts of her body, intensifying the family’s suspicions of physical violence prior to her death. Furthermore, controversial discrepancies emerged regarding the preservation of the body and the physical handling of the alleged hanging material, prompting a court to reject a fresh post-mortem plea on technical grounds earlier on Wednesday. While the Bhopal Police have formed a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the case and announced a cash reward of ₹10,000 for information leading to the arrest of the absconding husband, senior police officials maintained that initial evidence points toward suicide. Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha had also previously written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and CM Mohan Yadav, demanding an independent central inquiry to ensure transparency.
