Varanasi, March 20: A shocking incident of violence unfolded at Uday Pratap College in Varanasi on Friday when a 23-year-old student was shot dead in broad daylight, sending panic across the campus. The victim, identified as Surya Pratap Singh, was a BSc student and a resident of Ghazipur.

The shooting took place outside the Arts and Social Sciences Faculty building, where the accused allegedly fired four rounds at Singh. Eyewitnesses said the victim collapsed immediately after being hit. The accused has been identified as Manjeet, a second-year BA student from the Chandmari area of Varanasi. According to students present at the scene, Manjeet also threatened others at gunpoint before fleeing. In a dramatic escape, the accused reportedly discarded the pistol in a garbage heap while running away. A student who witnessed the incident said they initially mistook the gunshots for an explosion, only to later realise it was a targeted attack.

The incident triggered chaos inside the campus, with angry students staging protests, vandalising property, and raising slogans. Police from multiple stations rushed to the spot and turned the area into a high-security zone. Authorities sealed the main gate and ordered the closure of over 150 nearby shops to maintain law and order.

Preliminary investigation suggests the murder may have stemmed from personal enmity between the students. Police have formed six teams to track down the accused and his associates. Meanwhile, a video of the shooting has gone viral on social media, further fuelling outrage.
