New Delhi, February 20: The Unique Identification Authority of India has unveiled a major upgrade to India’s digital security framework with the launch of an AI powered biometric deduplication and document verification platform. The initiative, described as an “Invisible Shield,” is designed to strengthen Aadhaar security and protect the identities of more than a billion residents.

The next generation system enhances the accuracy of enrolment and update transactions by using artificial intelligence across multiple biometric modalities. The move marks a significant step in safeguarding citizen data and reinforcing trust in India’s digital identity ecosystem. Aadhaar Card Revamp on the Cards, Photo and QR Code May Replace Printed Details; Here’s Why.

Population Scale Biometric Deduplication

To maintain the principle of one unique identity per resident, the Unique Identification Authority of India operates one of the world’s largest biometric deduplication systems. Every new Aadhaar enrolment is cross checked against the entire database to ensure uniqueness. New Aadhaar App Sees Massive Adoption: Over 14 Million Downloads Recorded Nationwide.

Advanced AI models for fingerprint, face and iris recognition have been developed in collaboration with the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad. These models run on NVIDIA DGX high performance inference infrastructure, enabling secure and efficient processing at a population scale.

Each deduplication transaction involves billions of computations. With the deployment of advanced AI inference technologies, UIDAI has already completed enhanced deduplication rollouts in several states and aims to implement the system nationwide in the coming months.

AI Based Document Verification to Curb Fraud

To prevent enrolment fraud, UIDAI has also introduced AI driven document metadata extraction and verification. The system verifies documents using Digilocker APIs and applies AI inferencing infrastructure for semantic analysis and metadata extraction.

This smart verification platform is expected to ensure document authenticity, reduce turnaround time for enrolment and update processes, and improve the overall quality of service for Aadhaar holders.

With this AI powered Invisible Shield, India’s digital identity infrastructure is set to become more secure, efficient and resilient, further strengthening the foundation of the Aadhaar ecosystem.
