The incident took place on Tuesday morning, May 19, in the forest stretch between Banbasa and Chakarpur, an area identified by forest officials as an active elephant corridor where herds frequently cross the highway. Woman Was Returning From Maternal Home
According to reports, Nikita Kapri, a 23-year-old teacher from Shripur Vichhwa, was travelling on her scooter from Tanakpur to Khatima after visiting her maternal home. She was reportedly on her way to teach at Hind Public School when an elephant suddenly emerged onto the national highway from the dense forest area.

Elephant’s Tusk Broke During Collision
The impact of the collision damaged the scooter and caused one of the elephant’s tusks to break and fall onto the road. Despite the accident, the woman reportedly managed to move away from the area after the collision.
Teachers and staff members travelling nearby witnessed the incident and raised an alarm, prompting the elephant to retreat into the forest. Among those present at the scene were Shaista Parveen, Ravi Bagoti, Rekha Kanyal, PM Shah, Dr. RB Yadav, Vikram Singh Dhami and Mahendra Pal Singh.
Police and Forest Teams Reach Spot
After being informed about the incident, local police and forest department teams arrived at the scene. The injured woman was taken by ambulance to a private hospital, where doctors began treatment. Officials said her condition was stable.
Forest personnel recovered the broken tusk pieces from the site and secured them at the range office.
Forest Department Installs Trap Cameras
Harendra Singh Bisht confirmed that authorities have started installing monitoring equipment around the area.
"The elephant's tusk, broken by a scooter collision, has been seized and safely stored in the range office. The site is an elephant corridor area, where herds of elephants cross the national highway daily. On Tuesday, an elephant also collided with a scooter while crossing the road," Bisht said.
He added that officials are taking additional safety measures to monitor elephant movement and prevent future accidents. "Two trap cameras are being installed in the area around the incident site to monitor elephants and other wildlife. Two-wheeler and four-wheeler drivers traveling on the national highway, day and night, should exercise special caution," Bisht said.
