Guwahati, January 4: In a major push to upgrade long-distance rail travel, Indian Railways is preparing to launch India’s first-ever Vande Bharat sleeper train on the Guwahati–Kolkata (Howrah) route in January 2026. The new overnight semi-high-speed service will significantly improve connectivity between Northeast India and West Bengal, offering a faster, more comfortable alternative to traditional express trains and costly air travel.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has confirmed that testing and certification of the sleeper variant have been completed. The inaugural service is expected to be flagged off later this month by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a key milestone in India’s next-generation rail modernisation drive. Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set for January Launch: Ashwini Vaishnaw Shares Routes, Ticket Prices and Features; Check Full Details.

Faster Transit Time Between Guwahati and Kolkata

The Vande Bharat Sleeper train is designed for a maximum speed of up to 180 kmph, though it will run at semi-high speeds due to existing track conditions. Covering a distance of nearly 1,000–1,100 km, the train is expected to complete the journey in around 16 to 18 hours, making overnight travel far more efficient for passengers. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Directs Officials To Serve Local Cuisine in Vande Bharat Trains.

This reduced travel time is expected to benefit students, professionals, and tourists who currently depend on slower overnight trains or flights that are often expensive and limited.

Strategic Route and Expected Stops

The Guwahati–Howrah route passes through one of eastern India’s busiest rail corridors, strengthening links between Assam, North Bengal, and West Bengal’s metropolitan hub. While the final timetable is awaited, the sleeper Vande Bharat is expected to halt at major stations including:

  • Assam: Guwahati, Kamakhya, New Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar
  • West Bengal: New Alipurduar, New Cooch Behar, New Jalpaiguri (NJP), Malda Town, Bolpur Shantiniketan, Howrah

The service is likely to operate six days a week, similar to other Vande Bharat trains.

Coach Composition and Onboard Comfort

Unlike the chair-car configuration of existing Vande Bharat services, the sleeper version is built specifically for long-haul night journeys. The 16-coach rake will include:

  • 11 AC Three-Tier (3AC) coaches
  • 4 AC Two-Tier (2AC) coaches
  • 1 First AC (1AC) coach

Passengers can expect enhanced ride quality, improved braking systems, and modern safety features aimed at ensuring a smooth and restful overnight experience.

Regional Impact and Economic Boost

The launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper completes a key premium rail corridor in eastern India, complementing the existing daytime Vande Bharat services on the Guwahati–New Jalpaiguri and New Jalpaiguri–Howrah routes. By introducing a modern overnight option, Indian Railways aims to boost tourism, ease business travel, and support economic growth across Assam, North Bengal, and the Siliguri corridor.

With speed, comfort, and connectivity combined, the Guwahati–Kolkata Vande Bharat Sleeper is set to redefine long-distance train travel in eastern India.
