A 60-year-old pathology centre owner has been booked for allegedly blackmailing and repeatedly raping a woman for six years, beginning when she was a minor, Varanasi police said Saturday, May 6. The case came to light after the 24-year-old victim, who recently married, confided in her husband, who then directly approached senior police officers to seek justice on her behalf.

Following a formal complaint, the Mirzamurad police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the suspect, identified as Dashrath Patel. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (Rajatalab) Ajay Srivastava, Patel has been booked under various Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections for repeated rape and criminal intimidation, as well as relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The suspect fled immediately after the case was filed and police teams are currently tracking his location. According to law enforcement officials, the abuse allegedly began on September 9, 2019, when the survivor was a 14-year-old minor waiting outside her coaching center. Police stated that Patel, who was her neighbor and ran a local pathology center, took her inside the facility, pulled down the shutter, and raped her.

Following the initial assault, Patel allegedly threatened her into silence. Police added that the suspect later exploited her fear of social stigma to blackmail her over the phone, threatening to defame her if she spoke out, which allowed him to repeatedly rape her from 2019 until 2025. Honey-Trap Racket Busted in UP: Woman Arrested in Bareilly for Blackmailing Man for INR 10 Lakh With Fake Rape Case Threat.

The situation shifted in April this year when the survivor's family married her to a local youth. "After reaching her in-laws’ house and noticing the caring nature of her husband, she gathered courage and shared her trauma," a police official stated regarding the disclosure.

Upon learning of the long-term abuse, the husband decided to support her in getting justice rather than staying silent. He accompanied her to meet with senior police officials to ensure an official investigation was launched.

With the FIR officially registered, the Varanasi police have initiated a manhunt to locate Patel. Investigators are currently examining phone records and gathering additional evidence related to the blackmail allegations spanning the six-year period.

Local authorities praised the husband's decision to approach senior leadership, noting that his active support helped the survivor overcome years of fear and intimidation to finally report the crime.
