The satirical Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Tuesday, July 21, removed Vijeta Dahiya from the post of spokesperson and relieved him of "all the official duties" after videos allegedly showing him eating a burger during the party's Parliament march went viral on social media. The party said Dahiya's actions were "deeply insensitive" and inconsistent with the principles of the movement.
The controversy erupted after Monday's march by CJP protesters, largely comprising students, who were demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in major examinations, including paper leaks and technical issues. CJP Takes Action Over Viral Video
In a statement issued on X, the CJP said it condemned Dahiya's conduct after the videos surfaced during the protest. "We strongly condemn the deeply insensitive actions of our spokesperson Vijeta Dahiya, whose videos surfaced while peaceful protestors and our team were facing brutal police violence."
The party added: "Such conduct is unacceptable, shows a complete lack of judgment, and is wholly inconsistent with the values and principles of our movement." Vijeta Dahiya Defends Burger Video
Facing criticism online, Dahiya released a video defending his actions and questioned why he was being held accountable for eating a burger.
Speaking while eating a burger, he said: "Why did I eat a burger? This is a big issue today. So, why does any human eat a burger? Either they are hungry, or they feel like eating a burger. That's it."
Dahiya also questioned the criticism directed at him, saying: "Anyways, you guys hold me so accountable... I mean, is being a protester a job? Huh? Did you elect me to this position? Go hold the government accountable!" He further added: "Whatever I am doing, I am doing it for the country, doing it by my own choice, and I am not accountable to anyone. And I will eat a burger."
Protest March Leads to Police Clash
The viral video controversy came after the CJP's Parliament march on Monday, where protesters demanded action over alleged examination irregularities and called for Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation.
Delhi Police used tear gas and baton charges after protesters attempted to move towards Parliament.
According to Delhi Police, at least 178 people were injured during the clashes, including 118 police personnel. Police described the incident as involving "unruly, aggressive and violent behaviour" by a "violent mob". In a statement issued on Monday night, Delhi Police said: "During the scuffle, around 60 protesters were also reported to get injured."
Sonam Wangchuk Resumes Hunger Strike
The protest also followed activist Sonam Wangchuk's hospitalisation after he was taken for medical care on Saturday, ending his 21-day hunger strike in support of youths and the CJP movement.
Wangchuk later said he would resume his hunger strike while in hospital after witnessing what he described as the "brutality with which peacefully protesting students are being dealt with."
Government Holds Talks With CJP Representatives
The CJP said two of its leaders met Union Minister JP Nadda after the government reached out to them on Tuesday morning.
The party said it submitted a letter outlining its demands. Nadda confirmed the meeting and described the discussion as "cordial", while stating that the proposal for talks had come from the protesters.
Congress Joins Protest Against Student Crackdown
The political fallout continued on Tuesday as Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra led a protest march towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence.
Congress workers gathered at Kharge's residence at 10, Rajaji Marg before marching towards 7, Lok Kalyan Marg.
Later, Union Minister Jitendra Singh visited the protest site and spoke briefly with Rahul Gandhi. Congress leaders said the conversation did not result in any breakthrough.
