A 94-year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh, who became a US citizen over two decades ago, has appealed to authorities to restore her Indian citizenship, saying her last wish is to spend her final days and be laid to rest in her native village. Moved to US After Husband's Death

Mahalakshmamma said that after the death of her husband, Nagabhushanam, she moved to Petersburg, Virginia, to live with her son, Buchaiah Choudhary, an oncologist. She returned to India in 2018 after her son began working at NRI Hospital in Mangalagiri and has since been living in her native village.

'My Only Wish Is to Spend My Final Days in My Motherland'

Mahalakshmamma told officials that she has already relinquished her US citizenship and has applied online for Indian citizenship. She said she wants to spend the remainder of her life in India and wishes for her last rites to be performed in her native village. "Collector garu, I am nearing 95 years of age. My only wish is to spend my final days in my motherland as an Indian citizen. I want my last rites to be performed in my native village. I have already given up my US citizenship. Please help me obtain Indian citizenship at the earliest," she said.

She also assured officials that she would respect the Constitution of India and abide by all the country's laws if her citizenship is restored. She urged the authorities to grant her the legal right to live the remainder of her life in the country where she was born.

Collector Assures Due Process

District Collector J Venkata Murali said Mahalakshmamma's application would be processed as per the prescribed procedure.

According to officials, after the inquiry is completed, a report will be sent to the Andhra Pradesh government, which will forward its recommendation to the Central government for consideration of her citizenship application.
