Chennai, August 20: A woman superintendent of police filed a sexual harassment case against an inspector general rank officer. The Tamil Nadu government has appointed an internal committee to investigate the issue. According to a report published in The Times of India, in the written complaint the woman cop mentioned minute details of the sexual harassment done by the senior officer. In the complaint, she said that the IG attempted to hug her on several occasions. She also alleged that the officer started harassing her when she stopped him.

According to the report, the issue has now been forwarded to the newly reconstituted Vishaka Committee of the state police office. The committee is comprised of additional directors-general of police (ADGP) Seema Aggarwal and Su Arunachalam, and deputy inspector-general of police Thenmozhi. Retired additional superintendent of police Saraswathi and Ramesh, administrative officer in the DGP office are also part of the committee.

The woman officer in her complaint also mentioned that she was subjected to harassment for the past seven months. She even alleged her senior officer of sending obscene messages. She said that the IG even displayed pornography in front of her and also threatened her of making adverse entries in her annual confidential report (ACR).

The case will be investigated according to the provisions of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. The committee could refer the complaint to the concerned police unit if prima facie case is made out against the accused.

In a similar incident which surfaced in June, a woman IAS officer in Haryana accused her senior of the rank of Additional Chief Secretary of sexual harassment. In her Facebook post, the woman claimed that his senior officer threatened her to spoil her Annual Confidential report (ACR). However, the accused has denied all allegations, calling them "baseless."
