Nadia, November 29: In a tragic incident, four more people died in West Bengal’s Nadia district after consuming spurious liquor on the night of November 27, taking the death toll to 11. Around 24 people are still hospitalised. Yesterday, seven people were reported dead after consuming the low-quality liquor. In the wake of the incident, the state government has suspended 11 excise officials, including the present Shantipur officer-in-charge. Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has also announced a compensation of Rs.2 lakh to the kin of the deceased. The condition of some people is still reported to be critical. Government officials are monitoring the situation at the hospital. The incident took place at Nrishinghapur village under Shantipur police station area of the district. As per locals, a majority of people who died and fell ill are daily wagers.

Earlier in August, a suspected bootlegger was arrested, and 453 cartons of illicit liquor were seized from a vehicle. According to a PTI report, the cartons contained more than 20,000 bottles. The Police arrested a person named Ali Ajgar following a tip-off that he would be delivering illegal liquor from Haryana at various parts of north Delhi.
