West Bengal: Pregnant Tribal Woman Raped on Moving Mahananda Express, Accused Arrested
A 20-year-old pregnant tribal woman was allegedly raped inside the disabled coach of the Mahananda Express while traveling to West Bengal's Alipurduar. Railway staff heard her screams near Hasimara and alerted the helpline. A 20-year-old pregnant tribal woman was allegedly raped inside the disabled coach of the Mahananda Express while traveling from Delhi to her home in West Bengal's Alipurduar district, police said. The incident occurred as the train was nearing Kalchini, where the accused took advantage of the largely empty compartment to commit the assault.
The victim is a resident of Kalchini in West Bengal. Pregnant Tribal Woman Raped on Moving Mahananda Express
Upon hearing the victim's cries, railway staff promptly notified the railway helpline, enabling security personnel to position themselves to intercept the suspect at the next major stop. Simultaneously, the woman contacted her husband to inform him of the assault.

Suspect Remanded to Five Days Police Custody
Police identified the accused as Gautam Mahato, a resident of Rangia in Assam. Based on the victim's formal complaint, authorities registered a case of rape and placed Mahato under arrest.
GRP Superintendent of Police Indrabadan Jha confirmed the sequence of events and the quick intervention by railway staff. "The woman was rescued. Based on the woman's complaint, the accused has been arrested, and a case of rape has been registered," Jha said.
The accused was produced before a local court, which remanded him to five days of police custody. Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assault and are currently recording statements as part of the formal probe.
