Why CCPA Fined Storia Foods: Know the Truth Behind '100% Juice' Marketing Claims

The CCPA fined Storia Foods INR 1 lakh for misleading ads on its '100 per cent Juice' and '100 per cent Tender Coconut Water' lines, which were mostly water and concentrate. The regulator rejected back-of-pack fine-print defences and ordered the immediate removal of unsubstantiated health claims like 'Combats Virus' from all packaging and web listings.

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed an INR 1 lakh penalty on packaged beverage manufacturer Storia Foods and Beverages Private Limited for misleading advertisements and unfair trade practices. The consumer watchdog ruled that the company's prominent front-of-pack labelling - including claims of "100 per cent Tender Coconut Water” and "100 per cent Juice” - falsely represented the actual composition of its products, which were heavily diluted with water and derived from concentrates.

The regulatory order was issued on June 18, following a suo motu investigation headed by CCPA Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare and Commissioner Anupam Mishra. CCPA Cracks Down on IndiaMART, Justdial and Other Platforms Over Online Sale of Hazardous Chemicals.

Discrepancies Found in Coconut Water and Fruit Juices

An examination of Storia’s product composition revealed significant gaps between its marketing claims and its actual ingredient lists. The CCPA found that the company's "100% Tender Coconut Water" was not pure coconut water, but a reconstituted beverage consisting of added water and just 9.6 per cent coconut water concentrate. Furthermore, the product contained the food preservative INS 202, which the authority noted made the accompanying label of "100% Natural" legally untenable. A similar pattern was observed across Storia’s Pomegranate, Mixed Fruit, Mango, and Guava Chilli beverage variants. While advertised explicitly as “100% Juice,” the authority noted that the ingredient panels showed these beverages were predominantly water, with the actual fruit pulp or concentrate content hovering between a minor 4 per cent and 16 per cent.

The regulator also flagged naming violations on the company’s Pomegranate and Mixed Fruit options, pointing out that apple juice concentrate was present in an equal or greater volume than the primary fruits named on the front of the box. "The term ‘100% Juice’ carries a specific and well-understood meaning for an ordinary consumer - it represents a product that is entirely and directly derived from fruit, with no added water, sugar, or other ingredients,” the CCPA stated in its ruling.

Fine Print Disclaimers Rejected as a Legal Defense

During the proceedings, Storia Foods argued that its back-of-the-pack nutrition and ingredient panels provided sufficient disclosure to inform the public that the beverages were reconstituted. The CCPA flatly rejected this defence, reinforcing that prominent front-of-pack claims dictate consumer perception at the point of purchase. “A disclaimer that seeks to undo what the principal claim has already communicated to the consumer is not a cure,” the authority observed.

Unsubstantiated Therapeutic and Health Claims

Beyond composition claims, the consumer watchdog held that Storia had engaged in aggressive marketing by printing therapeutic health claims without any product-specific scientific validation. The company’s promotional materials claimed its beverages could "Combats Virus", "Improves Metabolism", "Kills Fatigue", and "Rehydrates the Body Faster than Water". Although Storia informed the regulator that it had discontinued these health statements in December 2023, the CCPA noted that the "Combats Virus" claim remained actively visible on the company’s official web storefront as late as September 2024. Himachal Pradesh Consumer Court Orders Tata Motors To Refund Palampur Resident Over Defective Harrier; Here's Why.

Cease and Desist Mandate Across Digital Platforms

The CCPA has issued a strict directive ordering Storia Foods to immediately remove the misleading “100% Tender Coconut Water” and “100% Natural” phrasing from its physical packaging, corporate website, and third-party e-commerce listings. The beverage manufacturer must also stop utilising the "100% Juice" tag for its Pomegranate, Mixed Fruit, Mango, and Guava Chilli lines on all digital platforms. Moving forward, the regulator has prohibited the company from attributing any therapeutic or health benefits to its product inventory in future ad campaigns unless they are fully backed by rigorous, product-specific scientific substantiation.
