The 2018 Karnataka by-elections were touted as the semi-final before the 2019 General Elections. If that statement holds true, then the BJP has a lot of work to do before the General Elections to be held next year. Looking at the results, the bypolls results for the Lok Sabha seats of Ballari, Mandya, Shivamogga could not have come at a better time for the Congress and JDS.

The Congress scored a major victory wresting the Bharatiya Janata Party citadel in Bellary (reserved) Lok Sabha seat, when its candidate V.S. Ugrappa defeated BJP's J. Shantha by a margin of 2,43,161 votes. Ugrappa polled 6,28,365 votes against 3,85,204 secured by Shantha, sister of BJP leader B. Sriramulu, a close associate of controversial Reddy brothers.

Congress candidate VS Ugrappa wins the Ballari Lok Sabha seat in the Karnataka Bye-Elections 2018. This is a massive boost for the Congress as the seat earlier belonged to the BJP. VS Ugrappa won by a handsome margin and fetched over 5 lakh votes, beating the BJP candidate by over 3 lakh votes.

JDS candidate LR Shivaramegowda wins with a record 3 lakh plus votes from the Mandya Lok Sabha seat in the Karnataka By-Elections 2018. The only saving grace for the BJP is BY Raghavendra, who won the Shivamogga Lok Sabha seat with a margin of 52,148 votes. BY Raghavendra, who is the son of Lingayat strongman and former Karnataka CM BS Yeddyurappa, thanked the voters for their support and said that Shivamogga will continue to be BJP stronghold.
