New Delhi, October 9: Blaming the Opposition for the violence against migrant labourers in Gujarat, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party demanded Congress president Rahul Gandhi to sack the party's legislator Alpesh Thakor, accused of instigating attacks on migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

"If Rahul Gandhi is actually worried for Gujarat, Bihar and India, then he must immediately expel Alpesh Thakor from the party. This is what we demand from Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party," said BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra. Narendra Modi, Amit Shah Reprimand Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, Deputy CM Nitin Patel Over Attacks on Migrant Workers in State.

The Congress, meanwhile, has expelled its regional leader Mohanji Thakor, who has been arrested by the police for his alleged involvement in the violence against North Indian migrants.

Alpesh, a staunch OBC leader, is accused of delivering hate speeches in the past against migrant labourers in North Gujarat region. The Radhanpur MLA, however, has refuted the charge claiming that he has never advocated for violence.

"It is true that I have been demanding the government to implement the norm that 80% recruits in Gujarat should be the local job seekers. But I have never instigated violence against those from UP and Bihar," Alpesh said.

Notably, the violence in Gujarat broke out last week after a Bihar migrant was held for raping a 14-month-old infant in Sabarkantha.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has appealed the migrants to refrain from leaving the state. "We assure you that no one will be attacked. The government will ensure a safe environment for everyone," he said, adding that over 450 rioters have been arrested.
