New Delhi, August 22: Rakesh Ahuja, the Investigating Officer (IO) of Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the INX Media case involving former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, has been transferred back to the Delhi Police. The news of Rakesh Ahuja's transfer comes a day after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested P Chidambaram in connection with the INX Media case.
According to Enforcement Directorate, Ahuja's term in the economic law enforcement agency ended over three weeks ago. The ED has been tightening its noose around Chidambaram and his son Karti in the INX Media case. This case is related to alleged kickbacks received by Karti in exchange for allowing INX Media, a television company, to receive Rs 305 crore as foreign funds. According to INX co-founders Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, they paid a bribe to get the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance in 2007 when Chidambaram was finance minister. Karti was arrested on February 28, 2018, by the CBI for allegedly accepting money to facilitate the FIPB clearance to INX Media. He was later granted bail. After the dramatic sequence of events on Wednesday evening that saw the arrest of the senior Congress leader, Chidambaram is said to have spent an almost sleepless night at the agency headquarter. He was quizzed on Thursday about his involvement in the money laundering and corruption related to the INX Media case.
The Delhi High Court had on Tuesday dismissed his anticipatory bail plea in both CBI and ED case pertaining to the INX Media case. While Chidambaram had gone missing following the high court order, his legal team moved the Supreme Court seeking anticipatory bail. When his plea was not listed for urgent hearing, Chidambaram appeared at the Congress headquarters in Delhi where he denied all allegations.
Following the press conference, Chidambaram headed back to his residence in the national capital. Soon after, a team of CBI appeared outside his residence, scaled the compound wall and arrested Chidambaram.
