Srinagar, June 4: In a major development, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday announced that Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir will be held considered later this year. The EC will announce the election schedule after the conclusion of Amarnath Yatra. The Amarnath Yatra will start on July 2 and conclude on August 15. The Election Commission said that it will monitor the situation in Jammu and Kashmir on a real-time basis and on a regular interval. This comes just a few days after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Sha took over as the Union Home Minister in newly appointed Modi cabinet and following J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik visit to the national capital during which he briefed about the security condition in the state which has been under President's rule since December last year.

In Lok Sabha election 2019, BJP won 302 seats on its own while NDA allies took a final tally to 353 seats in Lower House. In Jammu and Kashmir, the saffron party and Jammu & Kashmir National Conference won three seats each.
