Police have registered a criminal case against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Amit Thackeray and 20 to 25 party workers for allegedly removing a photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the Principal’s office at Government Polytechnic Pune. The incident took place during an afternoon visit to the autonomous institute, sparking a fresh political controversy in the city.
According to police sources, Thackeray—who heads the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS), the student wing of the MNS—was visiting educational institutions in Pune as part of an ongoing party drive. Upon entering the Principal's office at the Ganeshkhind campus, Thackeray reportedly raised objections to Prime Minister Modi’s portrait being displayed adjacent to a photograph of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Following his instructions, party supporters removed the Prime Minister's photo from the wall, where portraits of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar and President Droupadi Murmu were also mounted. The institution's authorities took swift action following the disturbance. The Principal, Dr. Rajendra Kashiram Patil, lodged an official complaint at the Chatushringi Police Station. The FIR states that the MNS delegation entered the administrative office without prior authorization, raised slogans, created a disruption, and allegedly issued threats to college officials.
Law enforcement officials, including senior officers from the Khadki division and Chatushringi station, visited the campus to review security and assess the situation. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Maharashtra Police Act, with further investigations currently underway.
