New Delhi, May 2: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has written to the Election Commission over a video which went viral on social media showing children in Amethi raising "chowkidar chor hai" slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The clip also shows the minors shouting abusive words directed at the PM.

The child rights' panel has asked the EC to inquire whether the children were made to chant the controversial slogans by Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was on campaign trail in Amethi. The kids could be spotted wearing Congress caps and masks. Video of Priyanka Gandhi's Reaction to Kids Abusing PM Modi Goes Viral, Smriti Irani Jabs Nehru-Gandhi Family

The 28-second footage, which left Twitter in splits yesterday, dates back to Tuesday when Priyanka was campaigning in her brother Rahul Gandhi's home constituency of Amethi.

On the campaign trail, she was confronted by children who greeted her with "chowkidar chor hai" slogans. While Priyanka initially smiled, she expressed shock when the kids levelled abusives against the PM. The Gandhi scion subsequently marked her disapproval, asking the kids to desist from using expletives and behave like "acche bacche (good children)".

Many on social media felt Priyanka should had done more rather than mildly reprimanding the kids. Among her critics include Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani, who mounted an offensive against the entire Nehru-Gandhi.

"Uncouth to the core. Imagine the filthiest of abuses that a Prime Minister has to endure from people whose only claim to fame is a nose. Lutyens outrage anyone," Irani said.
