Puri is one of the key Lok Sabha constituencies of Odisha. The voting for the parliamentary polls 2019 on this seat will take place in the third phase on April 23. Before delimitation in 2008, legislative assembly segments which constituted this parliamentary constituency were: Balipatana, Pipili, Satyabadi, Puri, Brahmagiri, Chilka and Ranpur. Following the delimitation, it comprises of seven assembly seats -Puri, Brahmagiri, Satyabadi, Pipili, Chilika, Ranpur and Nayagarh. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has fielded Pinaki Misra, while the Congress has given a ticket to Satya Prakash Nayak from Puri. Whereas, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced candidate from Puri. it has fielded its national spokesperson Sambit Patra. The last date of filing nominations for the seat is April 4. The scrutiny of nominations papers will take place on April 5. In 2014 elections, BJD candidate Pinaki Misra, defeated Congress'  Sucharita Mohanty by a massive margin of over two lakh votes. While, BJP's Ashok Sahu came at the third spot. Puri is a stronghold of the BJD. Misra had won this seat continuously in 2009 on the BJD ticket, while since 1998, Naveen Patnaik led party had won this seat continuously for five times.

On March 10, the Election Commission of India announced dates for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The elections will take place in seven phases, and the results will be declared on May 23. Along with Lok Sabha elections, Odisha is also going for assembly polls. The voting for the Odisha assembly will take place in four phases along with the Lok Sabha elections.
